The Spring Summer 15 Tidal Collection has grown out of a lifelong dream of combining all the things I love into one product. But my interest in luxury loungewear itself began more recently thanks to my experience interning at a contemporary women's wear brand, Draw in Light, that specialized in hand silk-screen print. Inspired by the soft and versatile fabrics and the drape and cut of the garments I wanted to create a collection of my own. All of the garments created in this collection were adapted from Draw in Light's patterns and made by Heather McDonough.
The Tidal Spring Summer 15 collection is also rooted in my love of the sea and the treasures it offers up. As a child I spent summers with my family on the coastal farmland of Pembrokeshire in Wales. Sailing, beach walking, tide pool finding, shell hunting and exploring caves - the memories live on.
This project was a means for me to explore thoroughly some of the different creative processes that contribute to fashion. Designing and illustrating, photographing and directing a shoot are all incorporated, as well as styling. I drew all these strands together into the curating of a book that tells the story behind my concept and reveals the narrative of my childhood projected through scenic imagery together with artistic portraits of the garments I created.
Each garment in the collection was designed to fit a simple yet luxurious style. Soft flowing shapes and silk and cotton blend jerseys are at its center.
I designed the garments either with a digital abstract illustration print of a significant object from my childhood or by hand tie dying them to evoke a sense of the sea and how light and reflections dance across its surface.
Through researching water masses and ways to capture and recreate reflections, I have developed an appreciation for the serene beauty of objects photographed in water or created to represent them. Organic textures and ephemera found and collected along the way have been critical to the development of this project.
The project has represented a journey on which I have revisited the landscapes and experiences of my childhood and moulded them into my love of fashion. The result is a collection that demonstrates an interest in creativity through mixed media and reflects a deeply personal vision.
I want to specially thank Draw in Light for Inspiring and helping me through this process. Without the use of their patterns I would not have been able to showcase my illustrations in the way most fitting.
